Book Review: The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent (ARC)

"Beach Readmeets Sweetbitterin this laugh-out-loud and ultimately heartwarming debut of a good friend's very bad decision and the summer job that stands to ruin or make her life.

What if you could be someone else? Just for the summer...

Birdy has made a mistake. Everyone imagines running away from their life at some point. But Birdy has actually done it. And the life she's run into is her best friend Heather's. The only problem is, she hasn't told Heather.

The summer job at the highland Scottish hotel that her world class wine-expert friend ditched turns out to be a lot more than Birdy bargained for. Can she survive a summer pretending to be her best friend? And can Birdy stop herself from falling for the first man she's ever actually liked, but who thinks she's someone else?

One good friend's very bad decision is at the heart of this laugh-out-loud love story and unexpected tale of a woman finally finding herself in the strangest of places."

I received The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent for free in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much Penguin Viking for my advanced copy and for having me on the tour!

The Summer Job follows our protagonist Birdy who seems to be perpetually down on her luck but when her best friend decides to ditch her summer job in favour for a sunny holiday with her boyfriend, Birdy decides to take the job in place of her and a summer of pretending and close calls commences.

Birdy gave me so much ANXIETY! 😂 She is such a messy but ultimately loveable character that even though what she is doing is technically wrong, you can’t help but want to root for her. The hijinks that she has to participate in just to keep her cover will make your heart race and also give you a good giggle!

I love how the theme of the story was all about second chances and how it is never too late to discover your dreams and maybe even find the love of your life. I loved the found family elements throughout the book and there were also some surprise reveals that definitely shocked me!

The Summer Job was a lovely romance to end the summer with and I am definitely looking forward to reading more from Lizzy Dent! Thank you so much for having me on the tour 💖
