Review: Scarlet by Genevieve Cogman

"Revolution is a bloodthirsty business . . . especially when vampires are involved.

It is 1793 and the French Revolution is in full swing. Vampires—usually rich and aristocratic—have slaked the guillotine’s thirst in large numbers. The mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel, a disguised British noble, and his League are heroically rescuing dozens of aristocrats from execution, both human and vampire. And soon they will have an ace up their Eleanor Dalton.

Eleanor is working as a housemaid on the estate of a vampire Baroness. Her highest aspiration is to one day become a modiste. But when the Baroness hosts a mysterious noble and his wife, they tell Eleanor she is the spitting image of a French aristocrat, and they convince her to journey to France to aid them in a daring scheme. Soon, Eleanor finds herself in Paris, swept up in magic and intrigue—and chaos—beyond her wildest dreams. But there’s more to fear than ardent Revolutionaries. For Eleanor stumbles across a centuries-old war between vampires and their fiercest enemy. And they’re out for blood. . . .

Scarlet is the first book in a wildly engaging new series from Genevieve Cogman, which reinvents the beloved tale of the Scarlet Pimpernel."

Happy Tuesday! ✨

Today is my stop on the tour for Scarlet by Genevieve Cogman! Thank you so much to the lovely Black Crow PR & UK Tor for my copy and for having me on the tour! I received my copy for free in exchange for an honest review. 💖

ARC copy of Scarlet by Genevieve Cogman on a grey rug with a wooden map and replica sword for the review.

I loved The Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman so I was eager to devour whatever she wrote next! And when I heard her next book was about The French Revolution with vampires I immediately jumped to read it! 😂

I must admit I didn’t know much about The Scarlet Pimpernel before reading this book and now after finishing I am desperate to read it! I feel like this might be a new hyperfixation for me for a little while 😂

I loved our main character Eleanor! She was witty, smart and full of ambition. It was so interesting to learn about the League through her and watch her become the something more that always wanted! Although I must admit, I don’t think I would have as much sympathy for the nobles as she did 😅

Genevieve Gogman once again shows her incredible writing skills in this book! I really liked how she balanced historical facts of the Revolution balanced with action that keeps the reader hooked!

Scarlet is a fast paced and thrilling historical fiction that delivers on the promise of magic and mayhem! It published on the 11th May 2023!
